Turn your lights off. Save a bird.

This is not a blog to follow. This is a school project about to to keep birds from getting confused by lights and running into windows. This is an awareness blog.

What YOU can do to save a birds life!

There are so many things to do to save a birds life.

The simplest is to turn off all lights when they are not needed and for sure during the peek of migration.

Move your bird feeder so it’s no where near a window.

Change the angle or surface of the window to lessen the transparency and reflectivity.

Mark the window with a bird mark or hang strips of newspaper from the top of the window.

If You find a stunned bird make sure you can move it safely to a place for it to recover before it continues its flight.

GET INVOLVED! Write a letter to a big company asking them to turn off their lights a night during migratory periods.

By doing some or all of these things… it could save a bird from flying into a window!

Sad isn’t it? Its terrible what happens to these birds for no reason but the fact that people are to lazy to turn off their lights.

This video take place in Indianapolis but it happens just as often in Toronto.

It’s not their fault.

I’ve heard soo many people say,

“why can’t birds just watch where their going?”

“Why do they fly into buildings? Their so stupid.”

It is not their fault!

All birds get confused by lights at night. During the day they fly in the direction the sun leads them. At night the sun is gone and all they can see is the blinding lights of the tall corporate buildings. They get confused. They don’t understand what their doing or where their going. They either will fly right into the light (which basically means right into the window) and break their neck or they’ll  fly around the building so many times they they collapse from exhaustion. It would be a long drop.

It bothers me a lot when people say that birds should just not get confused.

They can’t help it!

So do the birds a little bit of a favour and just turn off the lights.

This bird crashes into a window at night and was found with a broken neck the next morning. Its so sad what happens to them for no reason.

Lights out; it saves a life.

There are so many things in society that can kill living animals like: cars, air pollution and oil spills. Those are not very preventable. No one can tell a driver to stop driving a car just because its ruining a habitat or he’s hitting random animals. It impossible to tell a major company to stop digging up oil cause then oil spills happen and that ruins a lot more habitats and it kills many many animals. Air pollution can obstruct the bird’s view and suffocate them. All of these things, you can’t do anything about. No driver will give up his/her vehicle. No company will stop drilling for oil.

The simplest way to save a bird is by simply turning off lights. By, turning off lights the birds won’t become confused and disoriented and there for more birds will stay alive. Its the most simple thing anyone can do, but it saves a life.
